Following the announcement by the Prime Minister, Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council has decided to re-open the central food hub which was in operation during the long lockdown last year.  As on the previous occasion, the Trustees of Wirral Foodbank have agreed to work with the Council through the Wirral Food Hub.  Emergency Food requests will be managed through Wirral Council’s COVID-19 helpline, with emergency food parcels delivered to the client by Wirral Council.

We will therefore close our Distribution Centres from close of business Saturday 9th January for the period of the lockdown.  This was not an easy decision to take.  A deciding factor was the increasing infection rate in Wirral: as of 25th December the infection rate was 230.9 per 100,000; on the 10th January it had increased to 800 per 100,000 which does not take into account the impact of Christmas gatherings or the probable future proliferation of the new strain across Wirral.  We believe that the risk to Distribution Centre volunteers and clients is too high.

Wirral Foodbank will continue to be a key partner in providing emergency food, albeit working under a different operating model.  The Warehouse and Office will remain open.  To comply with social distancing, it is still necessary to limit the number of volunteers that we can safely accommodate in the warehouse.  A number of our volunteers will also be helping at the central food hub preparing food parcels.

We recognise the commitment of all our volunteers and fully understand the upset that this decision may cause, but we feel it is the right one to take under the current circumstances.
